If there is anything that can add to Phuket’s picture perfect holiday experience, it’s planning a trip during the annual Lunar New Year celebrations, also known as Songkran. We bring you five interesting ways to celebrate Songkran in Phuket.
1.Participate in a water fight
Douse others and get doused in return at the no-holds-barred water fight -the main highlight of Songkran. Arm yourselves with water guns and head to the centre of action at Bangla Road or drive by the Beach Road for some wet and wild fun.
2. Feast on yummy Thai food
No festival is complete without some lip-smacking goodies. Start with the traditional Pad Thai (a sweet and spicy noodle) and feast on other Songkran favourites including Geng Kheaw Wan (green curry), Papaya Salad, Tom Yam Goong and Mango Sticky Rice.
3. Buy a souvenir at a local craft exhibition
With special craft exhibitions held during Songkran, it’s a great time to indulge in some retail therapy. Take your pick from wooden carvings, silverware and leather goods to the world famous Phuket pearls.
4. Visit a Buddhist temple
Join the Thais and ‘make merit’ as they call it by visiting a temple during Songkran. Plan a visit to any of Phuket’s 40+ temples, including the famous Big Buddha Temple, the popular Wat Chalong and the ancient Wat Phranang Sang.
5. Chill at the beach
Although you won’t be able to escape the water dousing, you can find a bit of peace and quiet at some of Phuket’s lesser known beaches. Try the Banana Beach, Ao Sane Beach, Ao Yon Beach, Layan Beach or the Tri Trang Beach.
